These trendy plush velvet pumpkins sold at home decor stores and online boutiques can be a little pricey, but they’re actually pretty simple to make! DIY versions are our favorites because they allow you to use any type of fabric while maintaining a high end look.
I made my pumpkins with upholstery fabric that I got on clearance and Crushed Velvet. You simply cut circles out of the fabric and hand stitch the edges. Then, stuff with dried bean and fiber stuffing. You’re right, it is easy.!
DIY Velvet Pumpkins
1
Find a large, circular object, such as a pizza stone, pot or plate. Marker or pen to trace a circular shape on the fabric’s backside. Pick a circle shape at least 6″ in diameter and cut your fabric.
As a tip, use a variety of sizes if you’re making multiple pumpkins so you have a diverse selection of pumpkins to display.
2
Sprinkle some beans into the center of the circle. Make a running stitch along the edge of your circle.
3
Gently start cinching the edges, but don’t tie off the thread yet. Fill the pumpkin as much as you want with stuffing.
4
Close the hole tightly, then sew the opening closed. Stitch the opening tightly with tight stitches. Tie off the thread.
5
Optional Step: On two of my smaller pumpkins I finished the stitching by pulling tight through both the top and bottom. This creates a realistic smashed look.
6
Attach stems to your pumpkins. Enjoy!
Here are some DIY tips for making velvet pumpkins.
- Collect dried stems from pumpkins, gourds and other real fruits. You can also use branches cut into smaller pieces for a rustic look. You could spray paint them in gold or silver to give them a glam look.
- Instead of using expensive velvet fabric, you could opt for this Crushed Panne Velvet which comes in many colors and is only $8.24 a yard – super cheap compared to the other expensive options!
- Cheap fabrics can be found at thrift shops. There are many ways to save at thrift stores, so why not shop for some unique fabric while you’re there? Plus, more than likely you’ll end up paying way less than buying it new.
- Use extra-strong thread. This is very important so that when you’re pulling your thread tightly to close the top of the pumpkin thread won’t break.
