We love this sweet little word! CLEARANCE! 😍 The 2023 after-Christmas clearance sales will be here soon – and we couldn’t be more excited!
The best time to buy holiday decorations, non-food items, paper goods, ornaments and more for the next year is now. After the conclusion of the election, Items are usually on clearance at Christmas for up to 90% off! It’s a great opportunity to get huge discounts on Christmas items so that you don’t have to pay retail prices next holiday season.

Retailers like Target, Walmart Michaels, Hobby Lobby and other popular stores usually start to mark down their holiday stock at 50% or more on or around the holidays. Then, December 26th in order to make room for New Year’s, Super Bowl, and Valentine’s Day items.
Then, a few days before New Year’s Day (around December 28th-31st), many stores will mark down their Christmas clearance items to 70-75% off. With last year’s axing of most holiday activities, we can’t be 100% sure what to expect this year, but we’re hoping that the Christmas clearance sales will be business as usual!
Then, after the New Year, things get REALLY exciting…
After the New Year is usually when you’ll start seeing up to Clearance Sale: Up to 90% and 80% off at stores like Walgreens, CVS, Michaels, Lowe’s, The Home Depot, Target, AND Hobby Lobby!
While you can’t beat paying only 10% for next year’s holiday items, the selection of items may be picked over, so stock up if you can!
Check out these 10 clearance Christmas items:
1. Gift Wrap
Stock up on these items now! Stock up on wrapping paper, gift bags and tissue paper as well as ribbons and bows for next year.
Consider buying prints or colors that you can use for other holidays (i.e. silver/gold for anniversaries, red for Valentine’s Day, purple/blue for birthday parties, etc).
2. Paper products & storage
When they are at their lowest prices, stock up on paper plates, cups and napkins. Also, buy facial tissue, paper towel, cutlery and paper towels. Stock up on holiday paper plates, cups, napkins and other items when prices are at their lowest. You’ll be able to throw next year’s holiday party on the cheap, which will take a little stress off when that time rolls around again.
Also, be sure to watch for discounts on holiday items like Ziploc storage bags & containers, holiday-colored plastic wraps, baking cups, foil pans with lids, and other kitchen essentials you can use all year long!
3. Kitchen & bath items
You can also look for holiday items like potholders and dishes. Also, you should consider bath towels, soap dispensers and kitchen rugs. These are all great items to give as gifts, and they will last until the next year. I love having fresh, new hand towels to hang up in my kitchen or bathroom every year that I’ve forgotten about—and they make great gifts, too!
Also be sure to price-check any holiday household items (like dish soap, hand soap, etc) if they’re not marked down as they may ring up with holiday clearance pricing!
4. Ornaments
In the past, we’ve seen pre-Christmas clearance deals of up to 50% on ornaments from stores like Target. We’re expecting these deals to get even better after 12/25 when you can score ornaments from 75% – 90% off!
5. Decorate your home for the Holidays
It’s the best time to buy cheaply boxes of lights and other home decor, including ornaments, tree skirts or throw pillows. If you’ve been waiting for a deal on a new Christmas tree or an inflatable for the front yard, now is the time to snag one at a huge discount!
Don’t forget to look for full-size seasonal candles that have been discounted. They would make excellent gifts the next year, so stock up your gift closet now!
6. Gift Sets
Do you need to buy a gift late for the holidays this year? You may want to grab a discount gift basket that contains food, K-Cups or candy. If you don’t want to buy pre-packaged gifts that contain food or candy, avoid buying them. They may not still be edible at the end of next year.
However, if you don’t care about the gift packaging and are able to score a sweet deal on one, it may be worth breaking apart the gift basket and eating the items separately before they expire.
It’s best to look for non-food Gift sets can include cute mugs and stationery, or even games, ornaments, or body wash duos. You can either use them all year or save them to give as gifts next year. Think of teachers, neighbors and co-workers.).
7. Seasonal Food Items

Just remember to grab foods that you’ll be able to freeze or eat You can expect to hear from us soon Avoid throwing out food that is past its expiration date.
8. Clothing pieces & accessories
Don’t skip the clothing aisles! Grab any ugly Christmas sweaters or shirts that are on clearance, as well as socks, pajamas and other clothing items you think would be great to wear at your next Christmas party. You can always tuck them away in the attic and you’ll have a surprise when you get out the holiday items when next year rolls around!

9. Pet toys & treats
Chances are your pet likely won’t care if they’re chewing on a candy-cane-shaped bone in June or playing with a Santa-shaped squeaker toy in February. 😂 Stock up on pet treats and clearance items if you know your pet is going to enjoy them.
10. Books & advent calendars
Coloring books and books make great gifts, especially for kids who take part in school book exchanges. You can save any reading material you find on sale for next Christmas (especially the Elf on the Shelf).
